During the Edo period, when Japan was closed to the outside world, Dejima in Nagasaki was the only place in Japan where trade took place.
Due to the influence of the Dutch living there, many foreigners continued to pass through even after the country opened up, so the stone-paved slope in the foreign settlement at that time was called "the slope where the Dutch pass".
Nowadays, the slope below Kwassui Gakuin, Kwassui Hill, and the slope in front of Seikoin Temple in Higashiyamate, Nagasaki City, are called "Dutch Hill". In the surrounding area, foreign culture still remains strong, such as the former French Consulate and the Higashiyamate Western-style houses, and you can still feel the atmosphere of the past.
