Rongyu

In ancient Chinese culture, honour was an essential concept deeply rooted in the social structures and moral values of the time. Honour, or ‘rongyu’ in Chinese, symbolised status, reputation and how an individual was perceived by his community. It was not just a personal matter; honour was associated with family, clan and even the whole village. Even Confucius taught that honour was the basis of a harmonious society. 

The colour black also had an important meaning in ancient Chinese culture. It was associated with the element of water and symbolised wisdom, depth and the unknown, but it also stands for death and mourning. In this context a combination between honor and black became particularly relevant.
The connection between honour and black reminds us that in life, as in death, the way we relate to others and the values we cherish shape us definitively.
